How To Have A Healthy Pet

Congratulations on the arrival of your new family member. Many people ask us what they should do to keep their pet healthy for their lifetime. We have put together the following information to help you plan a complete preventative health care plan for your pet.

In order to be well protected from many diseases, some fatal, we recommend the following vaccinations.

CATS Dr. Smits DOGS
First Distemper 8 weeks Distemper-Parvo 5 - 6 weeks
First Giardia 8 weeks
Leukemia Test 10 weeks First DALP-P-COR 10 - 12 weeks
First Leukemia 10 weeks Second Giardia 12 weeks
First Lyme 2 weeks
Second Distemper 12 - 14 weeks First Bordetella 12 - 14 weeks
Second DALP-P-COR 14 - 16 weeks
Second Leukemia 14 weeks Second Lyme 16 weeks
Second Bordetella 16 - 18 weeks
Rabies 3 - 6 months Rabies 3 - 6 months

All vaccinations should be repeated once a year to maintain protection.

Intestinal Parasites. Sometimes your pet may eat something they should not and could develop worms in the intestines. It is a good idea to bring a sample of your pet's feces for a lab test to tell if your pet has gotten worms.

Spay or Neuter Surgery. The best time to do this is between 4 - 6 months of age. Your pet does not need to have a litter of young ones or mate in order to make a good pet.

Dental Care. Once weekly starting at five months of age is a good time to start brushing their teeth with the CET paste available in our office. Good oral care will prevent tooth loss in the middle years of life. For those pets difficult to brush, there are daily oral rinses.

Fleas. Almost all pets even those inside can get fleas. We suggest the monthly topical flea control solution Frontline or Revolution. There are other flea control products we can explain to take care of your needs.

Heartworms. In this area of Indiana we have a big problem with mosquitoes. That is why we suggest all dogs and cats take heartworm preventative medication April 1 to December 1. Every spring your dog needs to have a blood test done to make sure heartworms did not develop in their heart.

Thank you for the opportunity to be of service in helping to keep your pet healthy and happy.
