Basset Hound Check-Up

What does a typical exam look like?

- A nose to tail exam (looking at eyes & ears, checking teeth, listening to the heart and lungs, feeling for lumps and bumps, palpating the abdomen, etc.)

- Discuss issues/concerns that you as the pet parent may have

- Discuss nutrition and make diet recommendations

- Laboratory testing to check organ function (CBC, Chemistry Panel, Heartworm/Lyme testing, Urine/Fecal testing)

- Parasite Prevention

- Vaccinations (if needed)

Puppy & Kitten Exams

The first puppy or kitten exam is usually at 6 - 8 weeks of age. Regardless of when you adopted your new family member and their age, we recommend examining them soon after you bring them home to make sure they are healthy. Puppies and kittens are usually seen every 3 - 4 weeks until they are about 16 - 20 weeks of age to obtain all of their booster vaccinations. We highly recommend testing a fecal sample to check for intestinal parasites since these are commonly seen in our very young patients. Your new puppy or kitten can also be started on parasite prevention as early as 8 weeks of age.

Senior Care

Did you know that your pet is considered a "senior" at the age of 7? Our pets age much faster than we do, and that is why we recommend seeing your senior pet every 6 months. As they age, they can develop health issues, and most commonly arthritis. By examining them twice a year, we have a better opportunity to find health issues sooner and begin treatment to help keep them comfortable and happy.

Parasite Prevention
is recommended all-year-round to protect your pets from disease.

Parasites can cause disease and allergic reactions in pets. Unfortunately, we see heartworm disease and tick-borne disease in our area. There are many different options when it comes to parasite prevention for your pets. Is it hard to remember giving your pet heartworm prevention every month? Try Proheart 12, an injection that lasts for 12 months and prevents heartworm disease. Do you need heartworm, flea and tick medication for your pet? Try Simparica Trio, the first all-in-one tablet given every 30 days. Give our office a call today, our staff will be more than happy to help recommend a parasite prevention based on your pet's lifestyle and exposure risk.
